Why Facial Ageing Is Not Just About The Skin

Stacey Gaff | Founder & Esthetician

Stacey’s approach to skincare has been shaped by 25 years of practice, international influences and a belief that exceptional treatments should feel deeply personal.

After studying business at Simon Fraser University and completing her esthetics training at Blanche Macdonald, Stacey began working in Whistler in 2003. Over the next 15 years, she built a loyal clientele and exchanged techniques with therapists from around the world, including during a year working in Australia. These experiences shaped the intuitive, hands-on treatments she is known for today.

Her time at the Four Seasons sparked a love of luxury, while her heart remained in the warmth and connection of a small, local studio. Bringing those qualities together became the foundation of her two businesses, Lake Life Day Spa and Whistler Day Spa.

Stacey holds certifications in manual lymphatic drainage and intraoral buccal massage through Pro Aesthetics Academy, and microneedling through the Canadian Board of Aesthetic Medicine. She continues her advanced education with Biologique Recherche and iS Clinical.

Often described by clients as having “magical hands,” Stacey understands that a memorable treatment lives in the details: the rhythm of the massage, the thoughtful finishing touch and the feeling that someone is entirely focused on you. That philosophy guides both her treatments and the team she has built at Lake Life.

“I look tired, even when I’m not.” “My face feels heavier.” “I’m using good skincare, but my jawline is changing.” These are concerns we hear often at Lake Life.

You might notice flatter cheeks, a heavier-looking eye area or folds around your mouth. Although you see the changes on the outside, they can involve much more than your skin.

What’s Actually Causing Your Face to Age?

Your face is made up of connected structures. Skin, muscles, facial fat, connective tissue and bone all contribute to its appearance. They also change at different rates, which is why two people of the same age can notice very different things.

Understanding those layers helps explain why good skincare can make a difference, yet still leave some concerns untouched.

Your skin loses firmness and bounce back

Collagen helps give skin strength. Elastin helps it stretch and return towards its original shape. Changes in these proteins can leave skin less firm and resilient, while changes in moisture retention can make it feel drier.

You may notice:

  • Fine lines that look more visible.
  • Less bounce back when the skin moves.
  • Dryness, roughness or crepey-looking areas.

Collagen gradually declines through adulthood. Hormonal changes around perimenopause and menopause can expedite that process, and make changes in skin thickness, hydration and firmness more noticeable.

Facial Muscles Age Too

Just like muscles elsewhere in the body, facial muscles can lose strength and tone with age. These changes can affect facial support and definition, including through the forehead, brows, cheeks and jawline.

But different muscles have different jobs:

  • Some help lift and support your features. EMFACE stimulates selected facial muscles while also using radiofrequency to improve skin quality.
  • Others contribute to frowning or downward pull. Where tension is present, our Sculpt & Lift treatment focuses on helping those areas relax.

Botox reduces selected muscle activity to soften expression lines. It can be a great complement EMFACE because the treatments address different goals.

For people who prefer to avoid injections, EMFACE combined with hands on sculpt and lift treatments may offer a wonderful needle-free option for improving facial support and appearance.

Facial fat changes in fullness and position

As we age, facial fat pads can lose volume or shift position. This can leave the cheeks looking less full and the lower face looking heavier. Significant weight loss can also reduce facial fullness, making hollows or existing skin laxity more noticeable.

You may notice:

  • Cheeks that look flatter.
  • More visible hollows or folds.
  • A change in the balance between the upper and lower face.

These changes can happen even when your skin looks smooth and well cared for. Hydrating skin and restoring deeper facial volume are different goals.

Bone and connective tissues change too

Bone provides the underlying framework, while connective tissues help link and support the structures above it. Changes in that framework can affect facial proportions and the way surrounding tissues sit.

Think of a house: its appearance depends on both the structure underneath and the condition of the exterior. Caring for the skin matters, but it cannot reverse every change in the framework below.

Puffiness and tension can affect what you see

Not every change is permanent ageing. Puffiness can temporarily make your features look less defined, and tension around the jaw or brow can affect how your face looks and feels.

An eye area that looks tired may involve skin, shadows, volume changes, pigmentation or puffiness. It does not automatically need the same treatment as another person’s tired-looking eyes.

Healthy Skin Starts With Daily Care

Skincare remains part of every treatment plan we recommend. A routine suited to your skin can support:

  • Smoother texture through appropriate exfoliation.
  • Hydration and a comfortable skin barrier.
  • More even-looking tone with suitable ingredients such as vitamin C or a retinoid.
  • Protection against further sun damage with daily sunscreen.

The aim is a routine you can maintain. We consider your skin’s tolerance, your time and your budget, and adjust active products around professional treatments.

Different concerns need different approaches

Once we understand your main concern, we can discuss the options that fit. At Lake Life, that may include:

  • Chemical peels and homecare for concerns such as dullness, uneven tone or rough texture.
  • EMFACE for selected facial muscle stimulation alongside radiofrequency treatment of the skin.
  • Needle-free EXION Face for skin-tightening and hydrating treatment using radiofrequency and targeted ultrasound.
  • RF microneedling for selected texture, line and firmness concerns.
  • Sculpt & Lift for hands-on care focused on tension, relaxation and fluid-related puffiness.

Sometimes another professional’s assessment is more appropriate, particularly when the concern involves volume replacement or a degree of lifting that requires surgery. One treatment does not need to do every job.

Think ongoing care rather than a one time fix

Treatments can improve specific concerns, but natural ageing continues. Results take time, and maintenance depends on the treatment, your response and your goals. Consistent homecare and sunscreen remain important between visits.

You do not need to arrive knowing which device to choose. Book a consultation at Lake Life Day Spa in Salmon Arm to discuss what you are noticing and the options that fit your priorities.
